Before Syl: Magic and Chaos
It has been around 500 years since the first King, Karun, took power of the continent Aegys and forged the Kingdom of Syl. Before Syl, the two continents of Aegys and Kaldorin were ruled by the horrifying Djinn Koguvan, and creatures from all kinds of planes infested the land. Two powerful rulers, the elf Virnorinand the human Karun, banded together and called upon their gods to aid them in banishing the Djinn and its creatures back to the other planes.
The Kingdom of Syl
The capital of the Kingdom of Syl is Acheron and is currently ruled by King Sargos. The Kingdom of Syl spans across two continents: Aegys and Kaldorin. However, Kaldorin is mostly wild and the King faces many struggles in conquering the rest of the continent.
Culture and Religion
Syl is a culture based on a dualistic cosmology believing in the Two-Faced God, Adahr.
Because of the long tyrannical rule of the horrid Djinn Koguvan, any magic of non-holy origin has been outlawed in all of Syl. But these laws didn’t become prominent until King Sargos, the current king, came into power. Having a deep hatred towards non-holy magic because of the destruction it caused so long ago, King Sargos issued “The Cleanse” which sought out all individuals who practiced or showed any signs of non-holy magic and brought them to trial for treason against the kingdom. Magic is dangerous, wild, untamable.
The economy of Syl is prosperous. From fishing to agriculture, the 4-seasoned continent of Aegys supplies the Kingdom with everything it needs. It is a unified kingdom of different provinces.
Races
Sun Elves, humans, hill dwarves, halflings, and gnomesmake up the majority of the kingdom’s population. Other less common races include the Warforged, who were created by and for the kingdom to serve and protect, and the Aasimar, who were born with celestial blood and are forced to serve the kingdom. The Aasimars’ birth are thought to be a sign of Adahr, and these gifted humans are always hunted. Unfortunately, as holy and sought out as they are, they are usually enslaved to nobles as personal guards and are not known to be treated very well. Changelings and Shifters are rare but tend to live amongst people. In Syl they hide, are enslaved to a royal family, or are entertainers. In the Vildar Lands, they roam more freely.
The Vildar Lands
In the continent of Kaldorin, there are many areas still free of the empire, mostly tribes which are protected by druid magic, or fierce barbaric tribes who have lived in harsh environments too difficult for the king’s army to trespass. Known as the Vildar Lands, there are a few small “kingdoms” here, but these keep mostly to themselves.
The Exiled Lands
Beyond the Sea are the Exiled Lands. Filled with unholy magic and ferocious beasts from giants to dragons, these lands are, to the eyes of the people of Syl, uninhabitable. To be exiled there is a fate worse than death to Sylians.
